The issue with a tag like that is that you have to add it to each and every page. That''s why the search engines came up with the X-Robots-Tag, and set the value as you would the meta robots tags value. The cool thing about this is that you can do it for an entire site. So, if your site is running on Apache, and mod_headers is enabled (it usually is), you could add the following single line to your .htaccess file:
Header set X-Robots-Tag "noindex, nofollow"
And it''d have the effect that that entire site can be indexed, but will never be shown in the search results. So, get rid of that robots.txt file with Disallow: / in it, and use the X-Robots-Tag instead!
It keeps amazing me that I keep seeing people use robots.txt files to prevent sites from being indexed and thus showing up in the search engines. You know why it keeps amazing me? Because robots.txt doesn''t actually do the latter, even though it does prevent your site from being indexed.
Let''s go through some terms here:
Indexed / Indexing
Ranking / Listing / Showing
So, while the most common process goes from Indexing to Listing, a site doesn''t have to be indexed to be listed. If a link points at a page, domain or wherever, that link will be followed. If the robots.txt on that domain prevents the search engine from indexing that page, it''ll still show the URL in the results if it can gather from other variables that it might be worth looking at.

So, if you want to effectively hide pages from the search engines, and this might seem contradictory, you need them to index those pages. Why? Another quick tip to help you optimize your site: sometimes you want to load one or more images in a post in a nice
I decided, that the only time I want Thickbox to load, is when I manually add class="thickbox" to the code of a post or page. So I wrote up a little script that checks for that, and loads Thickbox if needed. Now you need to know that to make Thickbox work, you need to load both a script and a css file, so the complete code is the following:

This code should go into your themes functions.php file. Let''s explain it a bit: the function checks whether the content of the post contains the text class="thickbox". If it finds this text, it enqueues both the Thickbox script and CSS file. The add_action "hooks" this function to a WordPress hook. I use the wp_print_styles hook here, because that executes in the head, and makes sure both the stylesheet and the script file get loaded properly.
Now of course there''s nicer ways of doing this, like making it into a full regex to see if class="thickbox" is actually set on a link, to prevent it from loading on a post like this one, which doesn''t have a thickboxed image in it, but does contain the text. But let''s be honest, how often is that really the case? This simple conditional load means you can use Thickbox when you need it, but you''re not making your users download Thickbox all the time when you''re only using it in 5% of your posts.

Every website owner can explain in a few sentences why the website is online and why people should visit it.. this is the identity of your website. Each visitor has his own perception of your website (mostly based on, advertisement, design and tone of voice). This is the brand perception.
Within a perfect world the perception your visitors have of your brand and your identity would be a perfect match. Of course this isn''t the case for most websites (unless you work for Coca Cola, Google or Apple, and even then). Due to the huge diversity of visitors almost all website are facing the challenge of providing visitors with the correct information to persuade them to take the desired action (buy, read on, interact, subscribe).
In our experience, most website aren''t always successful in achieving this harmony of brand and brand perception… But how can you determine whether this is the case on your site? Look at your landing pages with high bounce rates. Visitors leave because they are not interested in your offer or expected something different when they clicked on the link to your website. And, of course, check out on-site search, it''s a very valuable metric to look at:
How can internal search tracking help you improve your website?
Going back to the example of the landing page with a high bounce rate, we only know people are leaving the website and can only guess as to what they were looking for. Tracking your visitors searches will give you far more insight in what your visitors are really looking for but can''t find.
By combining the (internal) search keywords, possible e-commerce data and the top content of your website you get some basic insight in the most popular content/products of your website. But this (as Justin Cutroni points out in his blog post) isn''t including searches visitors made on your site that have zero results.
What does a zero result search mean?
If a visitors performs a search on you website and isn''t getting any results it''s likely he will keep searching… But there''s a big chance this next search will be done on one of your competitors websites. A search query with no results can have quite a few different meanings, all of them useful information to help you improve your website, the most common ones are:
- Brand Identity Issues
Chances are you are attracting the wrong kind of visitors (or in the wrong stage of a buying process if your are trying to sell stuff). Taking a look at the traffic source in order to determine if you''re ranking on the proper keywords or target the right terms with your CPC campaign (maybe you can save some bucks). Some are visible and right on the page while many others are under the hood.
\nOne of the features that I really like is the ability to bulk update my plug-ins. In previous versions of WordPress you had to update each plug-in individually by clicking on the automatic upgrade link in the WordPress plug-in, entering your FTP credentials and then waiting for the update to happen. If you had a lot of plug-ins this process could take a while to do.
\nTo utilize the new bulk update process go to the Tools>Upgrade menu in the admin panel:

There you will find a screen that looks something like this":

Select the check boxes for all the plug-ins you want to update and then press the Upgrade Plug-in button at the bottom and you will then be taken to a dialog box your familiar with to provide your FTP credentials. Once you have plugged those in the upgrade process will happen and once it is done you will be presented with this results page:

That is it for the process. The only change I would recommend in a future update to WordPress is to place a link for this functionality on the actual plug-in admin page – maybe in the bulk action drop down menu. From what I could see this bulk update option is only available on the main upgrade page.

\nIn the past I think we have included to many changes into the maintenance releases. This has partly been due to the lack of end-user testing which has taken place during the beta phase and partly based on a drive to fix bugs sooner rather than later. This has had the unfortunate downside of diverting the time of the core contributors, that they could have been spending on working on features for the next major release, and has meant that the release cycle has been extended to longer than we would have liked. This means that you don’t get the cool new features like Trash as soon as you would have done.
\nThis post is an effort to summarise my thoughts on this subject and I would welcome discussion in the comments below – hopefully we can come up with a succinct set of criteria which will may it clear to everyone what the community thinks should be included in a maintenance release and what should not.
\nFirst of all I think it is important to understand the purpose of a maintenance or point release. To me these releases are about fixing critical bugs which affect a large percentage of end-users and disrupt their ability to use the software. They need to have a small number of changes so as to make them easy to test, lightweight to develop and to reduce the impact on the next major release. This also means that they will be easy to upgrade too and are less likely to break plugins / themes in the process so making the upgrade to them even easier and more worry free.
\nIf we let the content of these release grow too large then we will never have the time to work on the new features for the next major release which will then mean that release takes longer to arrive and may end up with less features. We also need to remember that every change has the risk of introducing a new bug and this is another reason we should limit the number of changes in a maintenance release.
\nNow we need to identify what sort of bugs fit into the category of critical bugs. The most obvious and easiest to identify are the security bugs – fixes for these need to be available as soon as possible. Once we get beyond security bugs it can get more difficult to quantify the affect of the issue and therefore how soon a fix needs to be in the hands of the users.
\nThe following list of criteria are my straw man proposal on this subject:
\n- \n
- The issue is easily reproducible and testable. \n
- The issue is severe – e.g. it makes a whole feature unusable and therefore the fix cannot wait for the next major release. \n
- The issue is a regression from a previous major release – for example if an unintentional/incompatible change to an API or UI was made. \n
- The issue is not just that warnings or notices appear when WP_DEBUG is enabled the area of code in question must also fail to work correctly. \n

The coolest new stuff from a user point of view is:

- Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete. \n
- Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements. \n
- Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading. \n
- Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release). \n
2.9 provides the smoothest ride yet because of a number of improvements under the hood and more subtle improvements you’ll begin to appreciate once you’ve been around the block a few times. Here’s just a sampling:

- We now have
rel=canonicalsupport for better SEO. \n - There is automatic database optimization support, which you can enable in your
wp-config.phpfile by addingdefine(''WP_ALLOW_REPAIR'', true);. \n - Themes can register “post thumbnails” which allow them to attach an image to the post, especially useful for magazine-style themes. \n
- A new
commentmetatable that allows arbitrary key/value pairs to be attached to comments, just like posts, so you can now expand greatly what you can do in the comment framework. \n - Custom post types have been upgraded with better API support so you can juggle more types than just post, page, and attachment. (More of this planned for 3.0.) \n
- You can set custom theme directories, so a plugin can register a theme to be bundled with it or you can have multiple shared theme directories on your server. \n
- We’ve upgraded TinyMCE WYSIWYG editing and Simplepie. \n
- Sidebars can now have descriptions so it’s more obvious what and where they do what they do. \n
- Specify category templates not just by ID, like before, but by slug, which will make it easier for theme developers to do custom things with categories — like post types! \n
- Registration and profiles are now extensible to allow you to collect things more easily, like a user’s Twitter account or any other fields you can imagine. \n
- The XML-RPC API has been extended to allow changing the user registration option. We fixed some Atom API attachment issues. \n
- Create custom galleries with the new include and exclude attributes that allow you to pull attachments from any post, not just the current one. \n
- When you’re editing files in the theme and plugin editors it remembers your location and takes you back to that line after you save. (Thank goodness!!!) \n
- The Press This bookmarklet has been improved and is faster than ever; give it a try for on-the-fly blogging from wherever you are on the internet. \n
- Custom taxonomies are now included in the WXR export file and imported correctly. \n
- Better hooks and filters for excerpts, smilies, HTTP requests, user profiles, author links, taxonomies, SSL support, tag clouds, query_posts and WP_Query \n
All of this and more is reflected in the over 500 tickets, bugs, and enhancements that WP developers in this release cycle.

\nWhen Kubrick was bundled with core back in 2005, it was a cutting edge theme. Custom header, rounded corners, clean design… if you were using WordPress back then, let’s face it, you were impressed. Time moves on, though, fashions change, new styles become old standards, and what was once cutting edge suddenly seems old-fashioned and out of date.
\nSo, a new bundled theme in 2010? We think it’s a good idea. Something nice and light that can serve as a good example theme, include newer theme-based features, and look nice (and current) on a public site. We’d like to introduce a new default theme with version 3.0, which is anticipated to come out in mid-2010 (hence the name), and think it would be good for it to blend well aesthetically with WordPress itself.
\nI’d been advocating moving toward Elastic, the theme framework/WYSIWYG theme editor that was one of our Google Summer of Code student projects, but after some discussion I agreed with the guys that while Elastic is awesome and should be promoted as a community development project, it’s heavier than a default theme needs to be. The default theme doesn’t need to be a full-featured framework, it just needs to work well, look awesome, have good code and be a good starting point for beginning themers. We were thinking of a fairly minimalist design that would make it easy to customize.
\nAs for the code, there’s a question of if it will really be a new theme, or if it will be a re-styled and updated version of Kubrick. We don’t know the final answer to that yet, because the ultimate decision will be made with the community’s input, but we believe all new markup is the way to go. What do you think? Without venturing into theme framework territory, are there features you think a new default theme should have? Some people have been talking about it on Trac over the past year, if you wonder what’s been tossed around so far. I thought about posting a poll here (you know how I love posting polls to gauge opinion), but in this case I think a discussion thread might be better, so that each vote can explain the reason behind it. There is no shortage of WordPress consultants to choose from when it comes time to pay for custom development work. If you are aiming towards becoming a WordPress consultant, I encourage you to check out these advanced power tips for template developers written by Jacob Goldman on SmashingMagazine.com Jacob does a nice job explaining all sorts of ways consultants can make tailored versions of WordPress. Everything from branding the back-end to modifying the contextual HELP drop-down menu so that it contains information specific to that theme. One of my favorite tips presented in the list is the first one, Customizing the Dashboard Widgets. This enables developers to add a dashboard widget that can contain support, contact and other information. If a custom solution were developed for me, a dashboard widget like this is what I would consider to be a nice touch.
\nAlso on the topic of WordPress and consultants, I had the chance to interview Jacob Goldman in episode 81 of WordPress Weekly. We talked about what it’s like to do consultancy work around WordPress, some of the new features in WordPress 2.9, and his role in WordCamp Boston slated for January 23rd.

\nIn other news, the poll results are starting to firm up. Winners? Integration with WordPress far and away, followed by anonymous posting, WYSIWYG, and email notifications. We’re not going to follow these exactly, but it definitely gives us an idea of what people are most interested in and now we have to look behind the answers at what people mean when they say they want something. For example maybe rather than WYSIWYG we could bring over Oembed support from WordPress? I usually think of WYSIWYG more as a layout thing but a lot of people see it as the only way to include rich media. I’ll dig more into these.

I’m pleased to announce that I will be speaking at WordCamp Atlanta next month. I will be presenting an updated version of the Jumping Into WordPress Plugin Programming talk that I gave at WordCamp Birmingham in September. There has been a vigorous discussion going on regarding what data WordPress installs send to WordPress.org when doing update checks. Because WordPress (the software) doesn’t know whether a theme or plugin is listed in the WordPress.org repositories, it has to check them all, and let the repository sort it out. Some have expressed concern that private plugins developed for a single client could contain sensitive information in their headers, like contact information for the developer, etc.
\nIf you, as a plugin or theme developer, would like to exclude one of your plugins or themes from the update array, the following code will do the trick.

So, why would they want to switch an existing documentation resource from Mediawiki to WordPress?
\nOne of the first factors is probably that the data in WordPress is more structured. In a wiki, you can add some structural information, but there’s not a lot of enforcement, and there’s only a few bits that help you with searching and such. Another factor is probably that it’s much easier to theme WordPress, so you can create custom page layouts depending on what type of content you are displaying. And lastly, I’d guess that ease of use plays a part. WordPress is very intuitive for many content management tasks.
\nThis is also interesting in light of recent discussions started by Matt on the wp-hackers mailing list about the creation of a new Developer Portal. Many have stated that they think such a portal should itself be powered by WordPress. And with the recent addition of custom taxonomies and the upcoming improved support for custom post types, that certainly seems like a great project idea.

I’m not an Information Architect, so I’m not sure how I’d go about it. I would probably examine other documentation sites and try to discern what made some better than others. How do you think you would organize a WordPress Developer Portal?

\n\nLast week, I posted about the fact that Trac would be quiet for a few days while the core commit team met in person for the first time to talk about some goals for WordPress in the coming year. That prediction wound up being a little inaccurate, as having everyone together inspired a Trac sprint to get us closer to shipping 2.9. As of this morning there are only 11 tickets left against the 2.9 milestone. Yay! I’m sensing a Release Candidate in the near future.
\nI’d planned to write a summary post to encapsulate the discussions we had over our 3 day meetup, but to be honest, all-day (and night) every-day meetings creates a ton of things to summarize, and the post would be a novella. So instead of one long post, I’m going to split it up into a series and post a summary of the discussion on one or two topics per day until I’ve posted them all. Think of it like a WordPress advent calendar. For today’s post, enjoy the video above and I’ll list the topics we covered to give you an idea of what will be included in the upcoming summary posts.
\nTopics: Direction for the coming year(s), canonical plugins, social i18n for plugins, plugin salvage (like UDRP for abandoned plugins), WordPress/MU merge, default themes, CMS functionality (custom taxonomies, types, statuses, queries), cross-content taxonomy, media functions and UI, community “levels” based on activity, defining scope of releases, site menu management, communications within the community, lessons learned from past releases, mentorship programs, Trac issues, wordpress.org redesign, documentation, community code of conduct.
\nYou can see why I didn’t want to try to cram it all into one post, right?
Just to make sure it’s clear in everyone’s minds, I want to reiterate that these discussions were just that: discussions. They were not secret meetings ending in hard and fast decisions. The idea was to 1) get the core commit team on the same page in order to improve workflow efficiency and communication, and 2) come out of the meetup with a long list of things we know we want to work on in the coming year, and from there to work with the broader community to determine priorities/strategies before starting the work of getting it all done. As I finish off 2009 by posting summaries of the meetup conversations, I hope you’ll all plan to start 2010 with enthusiastic participation in one or more of the projects that will take these conservations from concept to reality.

In Building The Ultimate Website Content Map, Part One, he discusses some of the work that happens before you get going in creating a WordPress site—figuring out how you’re going to organize it. Past tutorials from Scott on custom fields and using sort order have been well-received, and all are worth your time.
\nThis week, I’d like to focus on the community aspect of WordPress.tv. As with both Scott and the videos from WP Channel this week, some of the best tutorials and walkthroughs on WordPress.tv are videos that were produced by WordPress users and community members just like you.
\nAs we’re entering a pretty quiet time for WordCamps—approaching the holiday season—WordPress.tv has had some pretty slow weeks recently. It doesn’t have to be so! Find something about WordPress that excites you or that you feel you’re skilled with. Think about how you would teach someone how to do something or use a plugin, theme, or feature as well as you do. Back at the end of October, What Is The Immediate Future Of bbPress was the question being asked around the bbPress community. Matt had published a thread asking this very question and was also soliciting help to move the project along.
On December 9th, Matt published the chat log to the first bbPress meetup that occurred in the bbPress IRC channel. The attendees were made up of folks who volunteered to keep the project going. Here are some of the tidbits I learned while reading the archive.
\nThere was a great debate amongst those in attendance on whether to continue bbPress as a standalone product, a dedicated plugin, or both. As far as I can tell, a concrete decision has not been made but quite a few leaned towards making an awesome bbPress plugin.
\nbbPress will become a registered trademark under the WordPress Foundation.
\nOne of the biggest weaknesses of bbPress right now is documentation. Therefor, a documentation team has been put together comprised of Tom39Away, pmall, justintadlock, and Nightgunner5. For the first time, access to the bbPress.org website will be given to outsiders such as the documentation team.
\nHajii who has been a long time moderator on the bbPress.org forums will be putting together a state of the forums where he will be stating where the forum needs help the most. If you’ve been looking at being more active on this particular forum, keep an eye out for the announcement for more moderators.
\nI was wondering when the name _ck_ would be mentioned which it was 37 minutes into the meeting. For those that don’t know, _ck_ was a very active bbPress contributor by being a forum moderator, producing a number of bbPress plugins and was recently brought on by Sam Bauers to help out with the project. But, after Sam left, _ck_ also left. There is some controversy as to why she left the project but Matt himself said he was surprised to find out she left the project.
\nI was very surprised when _ck_ left, I hadn’t heard anything from her like an email or anything — anyone know the story there?\n
Everyone took a stab at guessing why she left but the only one who really knows is _ck_. She had a loyal following and many in the bbPress community enjoyed her contributions.
\nThe next big topic was plugins. There are many plugins for bbPress that only work up to 0.9. It looks like there will be a survey published on the bbPress.org blog in the coming days asking users what type of functionality they would like to see in the software which would not only generate core functionality ideas, but plugin ideas as well.
\nIt’s also worth mentioning this information as well.
\nhajii: yes and to clarify just like wordpress.org, bbPress is not owned or operated by Automattic, it’s separate. Just because I saw a lot of people conflating them in the forums.\n I own bbPress.org just like WordPress.org — separate from Automattic — and the plan is to run it in the same fashion. We’ll register the bbPress trademark under the pending foundation\n
Last but not least, the survey I mentioned previously has since gone online. The poll focuses on ideas and features that you think should be in 1.1.
\nSo in the end, Matt is spearheading the project once again as he did when he created the software over a weekend back in 2004. In fact, this Christmas, bbPress will turn five years old. If you are interested in being a part of this renaissance, now would be a good time to head on over to the bbPress.org forums and make your presence known.

Anyhow, I’ve fixed it (and added in the protective wrapper), so things are back to normal now.

I started using WordPress back around version 2.2 in 2007. Shortly after, WordPress 2.3 was released. This version of WordPress introduced the pre-cursor to automatic plugin upgrades in the form of plugin upgrade notifications. I thought this was an awesome feature but some in the community raised their eyebrows as they discovered the type of data that was being sent from WordPress to API.WordPress.org. Apparently, it was more than just version numbers. You can view the debate that took place around the privacy issues in September of 2007 here along with the corresponding ticket in Trac which has since been reopened by a community member.
\nFast forward two years later and the privacy concerns have been raised again. Here is the data that WordPress sends back to API.WordPress.ORG in order to check for plugin, theme and core upgrades.

- Your IP \n
- Blog URL \n
- WordPress version \n
- PHP version \n
- Locale setting if there is one \n
- Plugin title, description, author – including all URL’s that form part of this. \n
- Full list of all plugins on your site, whether they are active or not. \n
This happens every 12 hours or when you load the plugin page if its been over 12 hours. The sticky point that some folks are arguing is that, the Blog URL should not be part of the information sent back rather just the IP address or some other unique identifier.
\nMatt has chimed in on the issue of disabling update checks with a response on the WordPress Hackers Mailing list that you can read here. Disabling update checks is a bad idea. It’s not the version number checks that are the problem, it’s the Blog URL that goes along with the checks that is the problem.
\nThe WordPress.org privacy policy does mention that the WordPress software performs checks to API.WordPress.org to look for new versions of WordPress and plugins. However, the privacy policy does not go into detail into what information is sent from the WordPress software back to api.wordpress.org.
\nIt would be in good faith to outline this information in the privacy policy so everyone is on the same page. It’s also good PR. Not doing so just stirs the rumor mill and leaves people asking more questions.
\nWhile there are plugins available that disable the ability for WordPress to phone home, one of the best ideas proposed thus far is by Chris Jean.
\n\nTo me, the only solution for plugin updates is for the server to send what it has since any other option would be highly inefficient or very error prone. So, why not add the ability for a plugin to opt out of having its information included in the update request? This should only require a minimal change to the update code and won’t require any changes to the update servers.
I know other software programs give the end-user a chance to opt-in to data collection/usage statistics but with WordPress, it appears you opt in when you install and use the program and the software does not provide a way of opting out. Some have mentioned that the plugins which strip out the identifying information are equal to an opt-out mechanism but I disagree. When you think about it, the only thing a WordPress powered website needs to send for core, theme, and plugin updates are the version numbers. Everything else just makes up the bigger picture.
\nIt’s pretty simple to me what needs to happen but all of the proposals thus far have met strong opposition that anything is wrong with the way things are currently.
\nThere needs to be disclosure to users of WordPress as they install the software so that they know upfront that their site will be sending data back to the mothership. Most software ships with a long EULA that users agree to by check marking a box. I think it might be time for WordPress to have a page added to the install process but instead of the EULA, make it the WordPress privacy policy. This policy would outline what data is collected, how often its collected, what the intended use of the data is, etc.
\nCheck marking the box would signify that the end-user has opted-in to the data being sent home. No check mark means that the end-user has opted-out. Opting out should not put those users at risk by not receiving plugin, core, theme upgrade notifications so the process of opting out means that only version numbers of those three things will be sent. If someone wanted to opt-in at a later date, the option could be added to the Privacy Options page in the backend of WordPress.
\nThoughts, Ideas, Suggestions
\nI don’t think WordPress is anywhere close to being spyware but according to the definition of the term by StopBadWare.org, WordPress seems to perform a few of the things mentioned.
\nI think it’s easy to shrug off the privacy concerns that are being raised and call those people paranoid but the points I’ve seen being made for the ability to opt-out have been pretty good. I encourage you to continue the conversation here in the comments or in the following forum thread.

There’s an awful lot of cruft hanging around from old plugins that I don’t use anymore. I cleaned a few things out, but something hit me as I was perusing all those options: I can’t always tell which options belong(ed) to which plugins, themes, or to the WordPress core.
\nIn many cases, plugin authors tag the option names in a way that you can figure it out. For example, Alex King’s Twitter Tools plugin uses a prefix of aktt_ on all of its options. And many other plugin authors similarly use a prefix of some sort that identifies the author and/or plugin. But it’s very inconsistent.
I would like to suggest a formal namespacing scheme which might help with option management in the future. The option_name field is a VARCHAR(64), so there’s plenty of room for creativity in option naming. Also, there are not really any tangible restrictions on what characters can be used, though most of us tend to stick with identifers that would be legal variable names when programming.
My suggestion for a format is: area:plugin-slug:option-name
\nWhere area is one of core, plugin, or theme (any others that should be separate?). The plugin-slug is the same as the slug used in the Plugin Repository or Theme Repository. For core options, the slug can be ‘_wp_’ for normal options or ‘_trans_’ for transient options, or they might even be broken down in to sub-areas (‘general’, ‘writing’, ‘discussion’, etc.). For backwards compatibility as names are changed to the new format, core options could go through a deprecation phase where they keep the old names, but the get_option functions could be modified to check for the new names first, then fall back to the old.
Using Twitter Tools as an example again, the aktt_last_tweet_download option could be named plugin:twitter-tools:last_tweet_download. The core option rss_excerpt_length would become core:_wp_:rss_excerpt_length.

- Less chance of namespace collisions between various plugins and themes. \n
Disadvantages:
\n- \n
- Added complexity. Coders need to remember to use the new naming scheme, use new option get/set functions which take extra namespacing parameters, or we need to migrate to some sort of universal OOP plugin/theme frameworks in order to enforce consistency. \n
- Plugins with longer names get less flexibility with the actual option_name. For example ‘plugin:all-in-one-seo-pack:’ has already eaten up 27 characters which leaves 37 characters for the specific option name. Still not bad, but there might be cases where it could cause problems. \n
- Without core buy-in, unlikely to to be utilized by the general plugin/theme codign community. \n
Other Notes:
\nBackwards compatibility for core options should be easy, for the most part. I am unaware of any code in the wild using the ‘foo:bar:baz’ format for option names, so collisions with existing plugins is unlikely. The current get_option() function can be modified to match $setting against a regular expression to see if the setting being fetched is namespaced. If so, but the option isn’t found, un-namespace it, and look again. If the setting is not namespaced, and it’s not found, try looking for ‘core:_wp_:$setting’ as a last resort. This behavior could be in place for a few version releases, then deprecated later.
\nAlso, as mentioned on the wp-hackers mailing list, current “best practice” is for a plugin or theme to wrap multiple options up into an array, and save it as a single entry. In some ways, that in itself helps mitigate some of the options table clutter. But a consistent naming standard, if followed by enough developers, would make things even cleaner. And there are certain use-cases where it still makes sense to keep multiple separate options. (I’m guilty of not grouping my options in arrays, but I’m planning to re-vamp all of my plugins eventually)
\nWhile I don’t really expect this idea to become part of core, I wanted to put it out in the wild for discussion. At the very least, we might be able to come up with some more solid “best practices” that can be documented on the WordPress Codex.

\n\nThe self-described black-hat search engine optimization crowd — the folks who assemble sites peppered with ads that are designed to attract search engine traffic, aka “link farms” — had been using my script to steal other people’s content and republish it on their own sites.
Spammers call those link farms “autoblogs”. They’re a popular fad among black-hat SEO consultants (which is what spammers generally prefer to call themselves). His description is correct: they use automated tools to copy material without permission and re-publish it on fake blogs covered with ads. Typically they also send high volumes of pingback or trackback notifications to try to trick naïve bloggers into linking to them (thus boosting the spammers’ search engine rankings – often at the expense of the original authors of the stolen material). They rip off both the bloggers whose material they’ve stolen, and the advertisers who are paying for worthless ads run on bogus sites.
\nIt’s a pattern of behaviour we’re all too familiar with at Akismet.com. Spammers take advantage of trusting (and trustworthy) bloggers, web sites and online services. And it’s the innocent operators of those services who, ultimately, are harmed the most.
\nTom’s experience demonstrates an unfortunate modern reality: that spammers will take advantage of trust and openness. If you own any web site that allows users to consume resources – that is, any web site that allows users to perform an action – you need to monitor it for signs of abuse. An unsupervised or abandoned web site is a spammer’s playground.

But what are canonical plugins, you ask? Well, that’s one of the many things the core commit team has been talking about over the past few days, and everyone agrees that we need to prioritize this aspect of the project sooner rather than later. So, here’s a super high-level description of how we’re currently thinking about canonical plugins, which we’d like to use to initiate some focused community discussion on the topic.
\nCanonical plugins would be plugins that are community developed (multiple developers, not just one person) and address the most popular functionality requests with superlative execution. These plugins would be GPL and live in the WordPress.org repo, and would be developed in close connection with WordPress core. There would be a very strong relationship between core and these plugins that ensured that a) the plugin code would be secure and the best possible example of coding standards, and b) that new versions of WordPress would be tested against these plugins prior to release to ensure compatibility. There would be a screen within the Plugins section of the WordPress admin to feature these canonical plugins as a kind of Editor’s Choice or Verified guarantee. These plugins would be a true extension of core WordPress in terms of compatibility, security and support.
\nIn order to have a system like this, each canonical plugin’s development community would probably need similar infrastructure to WordPress itself, including things like Trac, mailing lists, support forums, etc. These things will be worked out within the development community over the coming months, but in the meantime, we really need a better name for this. Many people have no idea what canon/canonical means (clearly, they are not Dr. Who fans!), and having to define the word distracts from discussing the core ideas behind the concept. So, we thought we’d do a community poll to see what people think we should call canonical plugins. We brainstormed a few dozen ideas yesterday and whittled it down to our top handful. Based on the definition of canonical plugins given above, which of these terms do you think best describes them? I’m including a short description of our thoughts on each.

Standard - Implies that these are the standard by which all other plugins should be judged, as well as the idea of them being the default plugins.\n
\nCore - Makes the close relationship to core WordPress development very clear, and has the implication of bundled plugins (even though we don’t need to actually bundle them now that the installer is right in the admin tool).
\nPremium – Identifies these officially-supported plugins as best-in-class and of the highest value, and could potentially disambiguate the word Premium as it is currently being used in the community (to refer to anything from commercial support to licensing terms to actual code quality).
\nValidated - Focuses on the fact that the code is reviewed for compatibility with core and for security.
\nOfficial – Makes it plain that these are the plugins officially endorsed by the core team as being the best at their functions.
\nCanonical – Maybe once people get used to it, canonical wouldn’t confuse so many people?\n

One English tutorial, two French tutorials, and a couple of WordCamp videos—including one overdue—make up this week’s activity on WordPress.tv:
\nLast week, we saw Google Summer of Code participant Daryl Koopersmith’s presentation on the Elastic plugin for WordPress. This week, we published the presentation from fellow Summer of Code participant Justin Shreve on his work creating a Search API for WordPress. Both projects are quite interesting and their presentations from WordCamp NYC are definitely worth your time. The audio levels are a bit low, so turn up your speakers or grab a pair of headphones—don’t let the sound stop you from watching.
\nOne we’ve been waiting for came in this week: the final “Ignite-style” presentation from WordCamp Seattle, in which Josh Harrison teaches some tips and tricks for the wp-config.php file. Since it’s Ignite-style, it lasts only five great minutes—check it out.
\nWe also published two tutorials in French from our friends at WP Channel: Restaurer une base de données MySQL and Rediriger vos visiteurs en fonction des préférences de langues du navigateur.
\nLast, there’s a tutorial from the creators of the Snipi plugin for WordPress.org, explaining the installation of the plugin and how it interacts with both the “stock” WordPress gallery feature and the NextGEN Gallery plugin.
